A three-month old boy has died after he and his mother fell from a second-floor balcony on the central coast.

The baby fell more than five metres from the Niagara Park home near Gosford just after 1pm on Sunday afternoon.

He was taken to Gosford Hospital and transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by a Careflight helicopter.

Careflight spokesman Ian Badham said the boy had head injuries that were “very critical” and he had to be resuscitated for the entire flight to Sydney.

He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the Children’s Hospital.

His mother remained in Gosford Hospital on Sunday afternoon with non life-threatening injuries to her back and torso.

“The ambulance paramedics and staff at Gosford Hospital have done an outstanding job in treating a very critically injured toddler,” he said. “It was a difficult job and difficult circumstances.”

It’s not known whether thunderstorms and wild winds on Sunday contributed to the fall.

Police from Brisbane Water Local Area Command are investigating and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
